Regardless, I've called in in the past about making a minor name change for a family member underage when I booked their ticket. The phone agent was able to do it really quick. I recommend calling in vs using chat. The phone agents are usually more experienced and have more capabilities to help with something like that.
Yes, his number was on the reservation. But since a company book/paid for his flight, maybe it's because it wasn't booked through his Delta account? When I Googled it, there were some people who said TSA gave them a bad time when the name on their boarding pass wasn't exactly the same as on their iD. I hope he doesn't get hassled over that!
He said he tried two different agents online and both said they tried to add his middle name but were blocked because it was a round trip on the same reservation number. If it had been a new flight they could have changed it. One of the two thought he might have better luck at the airport since they ticket agents have more privileges. He just doesn't know if it's worth standing in another long line only to be told they can't do it.
