As long as you have applied online within 24 hours and can prove it (take a screenshot), you have fulfilled your end of the bargain.
Coming back to this: how much of an issue is it if you're late or forget to? My last TWOV entry it completely slipped my mind to register until halfway through my stay at which point I was a good 12 hours past the deadline. My online registration showed "processing" until just before I checked in to my departing flight, at which point it was accepted, and I wasn't given any trouble at exit control, but according to some this will result in denial of future TWOV. I'm about to book another TWOV trip (the itinerary itself is compliant so I won't ask about that), so I figured I'd ask here if anyone has had experience with this kind of slip-up.
