AF/KLM (soon to be renamed America France Airlines) have already started down the slippery slope of XP being based on spend/fare type. Toss in BoB and the Superlight/Basic Fares. Down the road, your eligibility for an upgrade (and price) will also depend on your fare type; Superlight fares will not be eligible for OLCI upgrades, whereas Full Flex will have highest chance/lower cost.
It won't happen overnight, or even this year, but in the next 3-5 years ? Probably.
at the prices AF/KLM sells upgrades for it would make zero sense to exclude them from any fare
I JUST compared a upgrade price with a recent trip and the upgrade prices are higher then if I had purchased J outright before booking and yet they STILL seemed to sell ALL the upgrades ( not to me but to someone) 🤣😁
Free money for AF since those seats would go out empty.
I am amazed at how well they manage to FILL J consistantly at AF/KLM with cash upgrades.
I have yet to buy one due to their prices which I personally do not see value in but I am not their target audience
