I have noticed that Delta often releases just one seat at a time for a FC upgrade, so those who are +1 (and are at/near the top of the upgrade list) generally are skipped over in the days before the flight to the benefit of solo travelers lower on the upgrade list. If one FC upgrade is still available at the gate, the gate agent asks whether we want to split up or stay together. So Delta generally does prioritize those with status.
