Itinerary ideas for Fall in New England

I see that most posts that are more broadly about itineraries are pre-covid. Since things may have changed, and I’m planning a trip, seems a good time for a new thread.

My 3 oldest friends and I (we’re in our late 50s) are planning a week-long trip to New England to see the fall colors in October 2026. We’re thinking to start in Boston (I need somewhere I can fly into from Europe, they from California) and spend 3-4 nights there (2 of our group have never been), then another 3-4 nights somewhere else; perhaps Stowe, Vermont, so we can do some day outings from a single point plus have nice stops along the way, without having to change hotels too often.

I’m open to itinerary, hotel and outing suggestions. We’ll rent a car when we leave Boston. We want to stay nice places, mid-range to luxury, and prefer somewhere with a spa for at least one of the hotels. Go!
