I don't believe that to be true any more -- GS is not what it used to be -- and it will never be again... The annual reductions will continue regardless of the number of GS -- death by a thousand pricks...
I share the same observations. GS benefits will continue to chipped away. As one of the original 1Ks, some of the early 1K benefits mirrored the original GS benefits. We all know how 1K benefits have eroded over the past 30+ years.
I am fortunate that I don't have to requalify for GS anymore. Although United is still my go to airlines, I have ventured out to other airlines (non-US carriers) recently, and have had positive experience. It is a relieve not being captured by United and *A.
