Gold, booked SJO IAH about 12 hrs ago for tomorrow AM. 15 booked of 16 seats. I've been #1 on the upgrade list (and the only one). Still no upgrade. I guess UA is waiting for one more paid F.

(I did have a text chat with an agent. Many apologies from him as he saw the list, but no explanation and nothing he could do.)
They will clear down to about 3 seats at T-24h and then possibly 2 seats overnight. But never, ever, will they clear the last seat for a CPU until 30-45 minutes before departure. Your chances of an upgrade are closer to 0% given that somebody is bound to buy that seat on check-in or there's bound to be a last minute booking. In fact that flight is J1P1 PZ1 meaning anybody who wants to throw miles or PPs at it will instantly upgrade.
