My decades-long "perfect record" of not being asked for ID came to an end when I got doored by a car a couple of years ago. While the police were assessing the accident scene, they requested "some form of ID, like a residence card." The way the request was phrased suggested that any form of photo ID would be OK. But one Youtuber (a permanent resident) who got hit by a truck reported that a police officer hassled him aggressively for his passport while he was in the ambulance, waiting to go to the hospital. His response "Who on earth carries their passport? Are you carrying your passport?" struck me as reasonable but ...
