I noticed this a few weeks ago. I've had my passport info stored in my profile for a long time, and always added it to the bookings. But while traveling HBO, at the gate they'd usually verify passport depending on final destination. Since I moved to the scanned feature, they no longer ask to see my passport at the gate with HBO only.

Perhaps it's just a coincidence, but it seems to be that the scanned storage is considered to be more trustworthy. Though, it's not a true ID verification, since you can even scan in a picture on a screen or a print.
