Delayed baggage outbound still not arrived after inbound - compensation advice

A family member flew on BA207 LHR-MIA on 11/07/2025 and was unfortunately affected by the Heathrow baggage issues on July 11th.

They've now returned home and their bags remain undelivered. They and their partner were on a 10 day trip including a 7 day cruise. This meant purchasing a non-trivial amount of clothing, toiletries and the like to cover the entire trip at relatively expensive Miami prices

They are of course logging a 'delayed / missing baggage' claim with BA. I'm aware of the 'maximum liability' limit of 1519 special drawing rights (or ~£1600) per person, and also aware that BA will rightly assess what is reasonable based on various factors. As this was a cruise, their baggage contained some formal wear / excursion equipment (as well as 10 days worth of clothes and consumables), so I suspect the total reimbursement requested is likely to be nearer the limit of that liability.

As I lurk on this forum, I was hoping others may be able to provide them some advice on any tips or best practice so making sure their claim is successful, or any gotchas to watch out for.
