You can do it if everything goes OK. If not ...

-- Once on a flight from CDG (I think), we got to the gate at the International Arrivals Hall, and there was a plane at our gate. We sat on the tarmac for over an hour. Then it took forever for my bag to come out, even with the orange "premium" tag. I had so little time I had to carry the bag over to the other terminal myself and gate-check it at the second flight. Of course, I forgot there was a knife in the checked bag, which security kept x-raying because they thought they saw something, and I forgot it was in there (one $70 pocket knife I had to give up). I was lucky to flag down an electric cart, otherwise I never would have made it.

-- There's always a chance you'll get snagged for Customs/AG inspection. If the line's long, that can be a big delay.

-- In ORD no one hassles you about using a non-U.S. citizen line, which is often shorter. At SJC, and even the last time I was at DFW, they wouldn't let me.

I tend to take the later flight these days, to avoid the worry and keep my blood pressure down. So I spend a couple of extra hours in the AC, watching CNN and catching up on email.
