Your pitch black and my pitch black are vastly different. The last time I was on a 787, 7 or 8 years ago (AA or UA), the windows got dim, not blackout.
But I'll agree, not having control sucks, FAs on flight to control from us. 90% of why I pick window seat is for the view.
I have read, though I have not had the opportunity to try, that if you push the switch up on your window as the flight attendant is dimming the windows for the whole cabin, by you holding the switch, it will override their command and you will still have control of your window brightness.
