Which like the OP I booked a flight seven months in advance realizing afterwards it's basically a non refundable fare after six months, let alone limited during the first six months.

Most other airlines play the one year game too, but at least with United (where most of my business goes now) it seems that you can extend if you book a higher fare. Ymmv and the loophole may eventually close but it's much better than Southwest (and with lifetime status there I always get a free seat and free bag).
