I made a bit of mistake with a basic fare for a fligh on 6/11 for a flight on 12/14. I needed to change the flight to 12/17 and of course since you can’t change a basic fare, so I figured I would just cancel and rebook. Unfortunately I found out you have to travel by the the 6 month expiration date not just book by that date.

I should have upgraded the flight first then cancelled. Lesson learned.

if I use those funds from the basic fare I cancelled towards a Wanna Get Away fare, then at a later date need to cancel will those funds have the original expiration date of 6 months or will they go to a 12 month expiration date since the were used from a basic fare.

I think the answer is probably not going to be what I hope, but reaching out to anyone that knows the rules better.
