In the end we got what we paid for, but didn't expect such a low bar for a Grand Hyatt.
Just finished a stay here, where the checkin agent jovially asked about my favorite Hyatt property (I suggested perhaps PH Siem Rep or Maldives), and he said he hoped they would be in my top five! Like the poster above, it may well have made it into my top-5 worst full-service Hyatt properties. I went in with low expectations, but even those were not met. Let me detail the issues:

1) We booked a Grand Suite and a connecting twin (with GoH applied). Both my Hyatt concierge and I reached out to the property multiple times to confirm the connecting request. Upon checkin... you guessed it: rooms on two separate floors! After waiting some time, they secured rooms on the same floor, but the double room had a third bed. We asked that it be removed every single day of our stay, and each time they said it would be done immediately. It was still there when we checked out.

2) Elevators are a disaster; not nearly enough capacity for the size of hotel when running at full occupancy. Good thing my family doesn't mind stairs.

3) The neighborhood is rough, especially when coming from the southwest--sidewalks are not conducive to pulling suitcases, so definitely recommend against public transit here (and I am a huge supporter of public transit whenever possible). The distance to bus/metro was expected, the conditions of the sidewalk was not.

4) Housekeeping never came until mid-afternoon, when we were in the rooms sheltering from the summer heat. They never replaced the coffee service; we were reduced to making coffee in glassware the final morning. Decaf only made an appearance one morning.

5) The rooms were run down to say the least. Our suite, while large, was sparsely furnished and certainly did not befit a GH; even most HR would have been ashamed with the level of decor.

In terms of positives, I will say:

1) The club, while modest, was actually reasonably provisioned in terms of food and beverages. The liquor was rail quality, but that was to be expected.

2) The gym was above average by European standards with free weights and a cable machine.

3) They ran a comfortable shuttle regularly to just outside the National Gardens which was convenient for the main sightseeing locations.

4) The view of the Acropolis really is lovely; the ninth floor restaurant affords many tables that take advantage of it. We had a view from (one of) our street-facing rooms, but we had to stand out on the balcony to look that way.

All in, a mediocre HR, but well short of what one might hope for in a GH. I booked it simply because I could confirm a suite on an award stay; next time I will return to going with options outside the Hyatt portfolio in Athens.
