it must be hard for the merchants to work out if a sale will be lost if they reject credit cards.
It is hard to know if the customer has no money in their bank account so will decide not to spend at all when faced with a credit card rejection.
Perhaps that is why Australia has never had an EFTPOS only approach so that the choice is at the hands of the consumers. I understand some small businesses may be at a disadvantage but I don't think it's a big deal in similar markets like Norway where I can tap and go with a foreign card anywhere.
