Well, all I can say, OP, is apparently you didn’t read up before you booked! I’ve taken about 7 river cruises, with Uniworld ( similar to Viking) and Grand Circle, which is similar to Gate 1. Had you done so, you’d have been aware of the seating arrangements for meals, and tipping too. You do mention more tipping than I’ve ever encountered…on Gate 1 I would have expected the tour director and perhaps the servers in the restaurant. I have friends who absolutely love Gate 1, and friends who love Viking. When you choose an ocean cruise , I suggest you go way more upscale than Gate 1, where dining options allow you to share a table or not. My husband and I especially enjoyed Oceania, and also the not so fancy, Holland America ( on their smallest ships).
