That is the answer for compensation, but gsbazzo also asked about reimbursement of expenses. BA are possibly on the hook for those aren't they?

It would depend on what was offered and said - if BA did say "make your own way home and claim" then they would need to pay. If they offered a reasonable re-routing and that was rejected then that would go against reimbursement of re-routing yourself. It's not clear from the original post what, if anything was offered.
