Daisy, the time machine

Credit: flygande veteraner

Built at the Douglas Aircraft Company's Long Beach facilities in South LA with serial number (c/n) 13883, SE-CFP "Daisy" was born as a C-47 A-60-DL Skytrain, a military version of the DC-3 with a large cargo door, reinforced floor, and larger fuel tanks. She was delivered to the US Army Air Forces on 5 October 1943 and received USAAF s/n 43-30732. She was based in Oran, Algeria where she transported troops, cargo and supplies. In 1944 she was re-based to England in preparation for the Allied invasion of German-occupied Europe. Daisy participated in D-Day on June 6, 1944. In 1945 she was rebuilt as a civilian DC-3 and sold to Det Norske Luftfartselskap (DNL). In Norway she was given the civil registration number LN-IAF and the name Nordfugl. In 1948 DNL, Det Danske Luftfartselskap (DDL) and the Swedish AB Aerotransport (ABA) formed the joint Nordic airline Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), making Daisy one of SAS's first aircraft. After SAS she was sold to the Swedish Air Force for a 22-year stint in the military. , only for the career to become more legendary, where she was leased to the Red Cross for humanitarian operations in Ethiopia.

Since her retirement in 1982, Ingemar Wärme and Jimmie Berglund bought the aircraft and formed a foundation/association known as flygande veteraner (in English, "Flying veterans") which has done an incredible job of renovating and maintaining the aircraft in an air-worthy conditions and organizing historic flights for the association members. The aircraft has been actively flown, starring in air shows and special events. Unlike some other vintage aircrafts, experiencing a flight in Daisy requires Swedish residency and an established membership contribution first for security reasons so I have been looking forward to the ride since I joined the association last year.
