20mph is safer than 30mph, but obviously it’ll take you a third longer to get anywhere at 20mph compared to 30mph. There’s always a balance to be struck. I think it’s often the case that people think it should be 20mph outside their house but they’re inclined to believe it should be 30mph outside someone else’s.

I think residential roads should be 20mph. Down side streets there’s simply no need to be driving faster. Where it gets more tricky is where a residential road is also a main road. I can see both sides when it comes to these roads and it probably ultimately depends on the road. Even in Wales, it’s not a blanket thing. In Bath, even the main roads in the city centre are narrow, with narrow pavements are houses right up to the pavement.
