UA pulled ORD-HKG (and GUM-HKG) around the time of the 2019 Hong Kong protests, and simultaneously wrote down a few hundred million in goodwill on its routes/slots/gates at HKG, based on forward-looking projections of losses. At the time, COVID was not a factor.
