Might be worth it if the extra PQP provides a bump in status level for that year. But that does indeed have to be weighed against usually more onerous conditions associated with ticketing through OAL, since some still have change fees, and even if they match UA policy, I'm restricted to re-booking through same OAL.
On UA, if I change my mind about an international trip, I can simply cancel and use the same funds over time to book plenty of domestic trips.
