When I first started looking at these (few months ago) they were definitely better than AAA rates (for a Europe trip). For some reason in the US/Canada currently I'm finding a lot of 'hot' AAA rates which are way better and offer extras such as daily credit. Conclusion is to always check both and compare cancellation policy etc.
