Try to contact the hotel. It's their choice, but many are nice if there's a valid reason for a last-minute cancellation. Of course, this is more likely if you're a frequent repeat guest at the property and if you contact them immediately after it becomes clear that you must cancel. However, it would have been better to contact the hotel to cancel the reservation and plead your case before any penalties appear automatically on your credit card.
I'm not sure whether your MHC can help, but it wouldn't hurt to reach out, especially if you have a relationship with him or her.
