Absolutely not. UA is concerned about the how much a traveler spends on one seat (their own). Spend enough on your seat and you get GS. Co-traveler gets credit for seat he occupies. If the money spent on his seats get to GS level, he gets GS. If you want him to rise in status - sure, pay his fare.
