I haven't heard of any policy changes here, although cannot find any references to bag drop-off opening up to 24 hours before departure at MAD (for IB flights) online anymore...

I nearly fell foul of this myself, but luckily I was HBO and managed to connect to the airport wifi to check in.
BA desks at MAD close an hour before scheduled departure. They generally open 2.5 hours before.
