I have no doubt that Cathay will "slowly expand" free Wi-Fi – and maybe to Golds as the first step, as a status perk, before eventually unlocking it for every passenger from tip to tail – but I don't think this will happen quickly (we're talking years, IMHO)), and nor will it be driven by the action of any specific airline, it'll just be reflective of the overall industry-wide trend.

And even when it is 'free for all passengers' that could mean free low-bandwidth 'messaging only' for some, and/or a free one-hour block for premium economy... there are a lot of options there. But at some point, yes, I think Cathay will make those moves.
