AU – well, east coast to be more specific (SYD MEL BNE) – is more of a long-haul destination, even the A330s we've had here have always been in long-haul config.
That said, an A330neo with a flatbed 'regional' business class (assuming also direct aisle access) could still deliver enough of the same passenger experience to make sense on some routes or in low seasons.
What
could be very interesting – and no doubt very divisive – would be if the new regional business class was a lightweight 'sofa' seat, such as Finnair's AirLounge or ANA's new 787 The Room FX. Personally I'd not be a fan of that as I find those seats more of a struggle to get comfy in sitting mode, and that mode would be the majority of regional flights (mainly short trips with few overnights) - even if you wanted to nap for a few hours after an early start, it's easier to hit the recline button on a conventional seat.
Anyway, not too long now before we know what's in store for the A330s.
