I find people speaking via air pods tend to talk much louder than people speaking into an actual device. Into the device you can almost mumble into the phone mic. With air pods people are speaking into open air and (unconsciously) tend to speak louder to make sure the air pods pick it up. I know that is the case with me.

Speakerphone though is a totally different thing.
