There's usually three signs in the UK: the underlying speed limit being enforced, a second sign indicating that area is prone to speed checks (these tend to be permanent, whereas the cameras vary from being permanent, switched off or mobile); and the cameras are painted in vivid yellow. If mobile, within a vehicle, the vehicle will have various stripes and colours on it, and a sign saying something like "Safety Camera Partnership" or some such. So if you are not switched on to any of this then you're in the voluntary taxation game, or until you get better spectacles.
