The US has the highest pedestrian death rate and overall road traffic death rate of
a wide array of high-income countries -- compared to the UK, the pedestrian death rate is 4x higher and the road traffic death rate is nearly 5x higher; even compared to Canada (arguably a much more similar country in terms of road design and urban environment to the US than the UK), the pedestrian death rate is 3x higher and the road traffic death rate is 2.5x higher.
So frankly as an American, I'm not personally convinced we have any lessons to be giving the rest of the (developed) world on traffic safety.
