This is where US laws get funny. In my state, the law is that unless the median between the opposing lanes is wider than a certain amount you should pull over and get out of the way of any emergency vehicles. There are no medians that are as wide as that, so you must pull over even if the vehicle is on the other side of a divided highway (but they aren't going to pull you over just for that). I told a friend who is a fireman in another state and he just laughed because in his state, the law says if it's a divided highway then you don't have to pull over for an emergency vehicle on the other side.
