I'm starting to plot my requalification for elite plus. When will my collected miles start counting for my requalification?
Let's say I was flying XXX-IST-YYY, and I was on 79k having reached IST. Presumably, if I now collected 10k miles flying to YYY, 9k of those status miles would be wasted. If so - could I buy 1k status miles for $70 on my layover, thereby reaching Elite Plus and having the 10k miles from my flight to YYY count towards my requalification?
so are you Elite Plus right now? if you are there is no way to secure status miles over the new status effective date. your status miles counter will be reset when the status is extended at the end of the membership period. no matter if you have 80000 miles or 190.000 miles you start with 0 in the next period.
BUT if you are Elite and qualify as Elite Plus - upon Elite Plus qualification they will just deduct 80.000 status miles - the surplus is secured - so when you are Elite, have 79.000 miles now and fly a segment that earns 10.000 miles you will start Elite Plus with 9000 status miles.
