US citizen NEXUS member here. When I received my new passport, I self-updated it on
https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov and then emailed
[email protected] asking if Canada required anything and got this response [...] I replied with scans of my new passport and NEXUS card and it took a month to get a reply confirming the update. No problem when I used my NEXUS card to enter Canada at a land border for the first time this summer.

Any other suggestions, besides walking in to a CBSA office at YOW (for me), or trusting they don't really mean it with their ambiguous text that one should update passport numbers with them as well as the US?
