This has worked for myself recently. HKG > SYD leg (and return) of a GLA > LHR > HKG > SYD trip is with CX. BAH booking and the option to choose seats on BA.com is greyed out with a message that seat selection will be available at check in. I’m currently Gold and punching the booking reference into the CX website allows me to select seats.
This doesn't work in my case. No channel with either airline lets me select seats CX HKG > AKL or CX SYD > HKG. QF ZQN > SYD was doable by phone. For CX I guess I'll just have to wait until check-in opens.
