Can't say I agree with that assessment (opinion) for many reasons, especially in cities where the airport is a ways from the downtown city area. Even if I stay at a hotel that requires a shuttle, I'm often happy to do so if it offers the opportunity to drop the rental car off the night before, potentially saving on the rental car costs and hotel parking plus avoiding the hassle of having to return the car in the morning. At LAX, all hotels require a shuttle but I always picked my hotel based on which rental car agency I had and would then drop the car off the night before, walk to the hotel, and take the hotel shuttle in the morning. Pretty convenient to me (I haven't flown out of LAX since the new consolidated facility opened).

If I have an early flight out of CVG or CMH, I often stay at one of the hotels near the airport. CMH has hotels that are walkable to the terminal but CVG doesn't. I still find it most convenient to stay at the Doubletree on property at CVG, park my car the night before, and take the hotel shuttle for the short distance to the terminal. At CMH, whether I walk or take the shuttle all depends on the luggage situation. To each their own and if you see no convenience in that, that's your prerogative, but I see it as very convenient and very much an "advantage."
