Your assumption is correct. I am Delta Platinum and my wife has no status.
I currently have a one-waw ticket booked on a 2-stop Delta itinerary (LAX-SEA-ICN-BKK) because I know we will each get 3 checked bags with Delta. If I was positive we would each get 3 checked bags with KE, I might book a more direct 1-stop itinerary (LAX-ICN-BKK).
