Therefore, I assumed they were all revenue golds. Also, I was unaware that fare class had nothing to do with upgrade priority within each elite status...and that it was solely based on LPs within each status class. I guess I assumed BE was a penalty.

I don't know how the cleaned-up/sanitized version of the Priority List that the general public can partially view is structured (behind the scenes in native Sabre, it's just one Priority List) but on the full Priority List employees traveling for pleasure on personal standby passes are on what would be considered the standby portion of the list at priority code D1, D2, etc. regardless of desired cabin and not the upgrade portion of the list.
I was under the impression (but I could be wrong, I'm by no means an AA employee travel expert) that once any D1/D2/etc. were confirmed and checked in, that they could be added to the upgrade list, but would be sorted below any normal elite revenue pax from a priority standpoint. Similar to how it works for normal pax, you can only be added to the standby list at first, but once that clears, you can then be added to the upgrade list.
