An interesting experience last night - had a quote for an AA trip YYZ-PHL-LAX in first (sorry, got the last seat!) that was $472. Went to Amex to buy it there so I could use points and get the 35% back while we can still do that, and of course it was pricing at $510, but with one seat left and using points, and the PHL-LAX leg on a 787 lie-flat, I was going to focus more on getting the ticket and that seat because even $510 was a steal.
I went through the entire purchase process, and then when it went to charge my card, the page refreshed with a "congratulations your fare just dropped and is now $472" - so I went through the purchase process again, and bought it for the correct price.
Has anyone who noticed a price gap between published and Amex - and again, no, Amex is not allowed to charge more than published - gone through the purchase process and found the price reset to the correct amount? If this is common, then perhaps it's more of a technical incompetence issue than a deliberate attempt to rip people off. I know in the past I've just closed the webpage and walked away vs buying the ticket at a higher price, so I don't know if this is all really a display issue.
