Well UA does have 39 752 and I'm pretty sure revenue management is not aware which plane will be assigned to which flight 3 days out, which is why they were still selling J. And who knows when the seats became in-op, it could have broken down on inbound flight and there were no parts or not enough time to fix it.

Yields are probably not as high as other business or connecting traffic routes. I don't know if upgrades are that easy. My flight had 1 available seat at T-24 and it was going for $7,000.
