Returning through customs in Chicago - how long?
AA.com is offering me a connection in Chicago back from Tokyo (to SFO) of only 1hr 18min. Am I correct that this is a laughably unrealistic time to get through customs and to my flight? (arr AA 154 3:55pm, dep AA 1825 5:13pm)
The next flight is AA 2307 at 7:30 which is clearly enough time (3:35) to get through customs and make my connection, but if there's some realistic hope of getting back home earlier, I'd like to take it.
Assuming I don't have checked backs and I book on the 7:30, anyone have a sense of whether I'm likely to be able to get onto the 5:15?
Also (as an aside) in case anyone's curious why I'm connecting back through Chicago rather than SJC or LAX, well, much as I like the miles if I could get my connection from Bangkok in the morning I'd probably go through LAX... SJC is much pricier right now, and it looks like both of them require an evening flight out of BKK and then sitting around all day in Tokyo the next day. Having tried that before, I'm likely to be too tired to actually check out Narita, and as nice as the Admiral's Club is, just sitting around there watching movies or old TV shows on my laptop gets pretty boring especially stuck between a 7hr and a 10+ hr flight. Are there any shorter options than Chicago which will actually connect out of Bangkok in the morning? If the fare was the same, I'd be willing to forgo the miles on the BKK->NRT leg.
