I don't get the arguments in favour of removing this at all.

When I travel I keep certain things on me and not in my bag - things that are actually important like phone, passport, keys, wallet. I don't keep them in my bag, even on the plane, as if something happens I know I have the properly 'important' stuff on my person. I also wear a belt that has to come off for security.

Assuming that someone doesn't need to unpack items following security is as naive as thinking anyway entering security won't need to pack anything. Has anyone in HAL/BA actually watched what people do at the start of security and assessed that if people need to put things in their bag at the start of security they are likely to want or need to retrieve them post security? Or is that expected to happen elsewhere?

When I go through security I take off belt, take out items in pockets and either put them in the bag (preferably) or put them in the tray. I try to do that ahead of time. That includes tissues, which need to come out of pockets. Then at the other side I take those items and put them back into my pockets, which is where I want them to be. I'd rather not clutter up the end of the tray return area so I lift the tray out to the repacking area and do that there. That way I'm not holding anyone up, not fighting for space and not fighting against the conveyor.

In no way does this feel like a customer centric decision.
