free seat. Selection? Well I’d agree this is the one and only major difference between silver, gold and … and platinum.
yes, you forgo Doha meet and greet, which nobody I know ever used, and if your lugging your life on your back you lose suitcases… but for the average joe soap , silver is the sweet spot, I’m currently platinum, for the first time in 3 years, but I won’t ever chase it again.
Few things here:
Lounge access - only at Doha, and only the silver lounge. Silver doesn't get you into OW lounges at other airports.
Seat selection - saved a bunch of money this way.
Doha Meet and Greet - once had a 2hr connection cut down to an hour flat due to delays, with the aircraft arriving at a bus gate miles from the terminal. If I hadn't had booked Meet & Greet, I'd have missed my connecting flight.

For me at least, adding in better mileage and other stuff as well, Gold is clearly the sweet spot.
