Pretty big if.
Yes, that's exactly why I'm asking about how to interpret the fare rules.

Sure, it seems odd... I guess to elaborate a bit more on what I'm actually doing...

There are a variety of flights on AS and UA (5 per day each on the route). I'm pretty indifferent to which carrier I take, but the good flight times I'd prefer for my dates are overpriced. I bet the prices will drop. However, I'd like to lock in a RT at slightly worse times and then if the price drops for the good times, I can just change the ticket online possibly getting a residual credit or paying no more than I paid earlier. If the prices never drop, I'm locked in with a better price. Sometimes I book refundable fares when I do this but in this case the refundable fares are so much more expensive it doesn't make sense.

Right now AS / UA looks good, but I might want to switch that to UA / UA if some of the outbound UA flights drop a bit (or any combo). If UA can ticket on both AS and UA and the FFC will work for any future flight on united.com, it's strictly more flexible than buying AS via AS. I'm all about optionality when it doesn't cost anything. :-)

So I guess technically they aren't the flights I want, just flights I could live with at a price I could live with.
