Just completed a three night stay. It’s an odd hotel. While only a couple of minutes’ drive from the main parts of Buckhead, I wouldn’t choose it for a work trip. I would book the Grand Hyatt Buckhead instead, which is much better located for business. This hotel feels like it lacks soul. We rarely saw other guests, and I suspect occupancy is low. It doesn’t appeal to business travelers or tourists. To get to MARTA or nearby restaurants, you have to walk past four or five other hotels. It’s also used as a Delta crew hotel, which says something about their occupancy levels if they are willing to give Delta reduced rates to fill hotel rooms.
That said, the hard product is quite nice, visually appealing and better than other Thompsons I’ve stayed at, such as Seattle or Los Angeles. We had a two queen room on the ninth floor with a great view over downtown Atlanta. We didn't get the suite upgrade as the suite can't take 2 adults / 2 kids but I was told at check in they had suites available. It was quiet, even over a holiday weekend with the world's largest 10km road race starting half a mile up the road, and the bathroom layout was excellent.
The rooftop bar and restaurant seem to be the main draw, clearly popular with locals, with lines forming at reception each evening for access. It has a party vibe and didn’t feel appropriate for families at night, so we avoided it. The former Dirty Rascal space is now just an empty meeting room. The chef has apparently moved to the Hyatt Centric. We did grab a drink at the bar downstairs one evening. It was fine, but empty.
Breakfast was served on the rooftop. On Saturday there was a brunch menu, but it was essentially the same as the breakfast menu on weekdays (no breakfast items were missing from the brunch menu). Food was good, what you'd expect at this price point. One morning, service was slow due to staffing issues.
Valet was $55 per night. We used it since we were on a points stay, but the hotel entrance isn’t well designed. At night, when the rooftop crowd arrives, there’s often a backup of cars trying to get in.
Would I stay again? Yes. It met our needs for the Peachtree Road Race and had a comfortable room with solid breakfast. But despite the good hard product, it all feels a bit Thompson cookie cutter. It’s missing something. Maybe it’s the location, maybe it’s the lack of atmosphere, but it doesn't quite come together.
