THis is closely related to some people being very concerned with whether a routing involves backtracking. MEM-SLC-SFO is much more "direct" than MEM-ATL-SFO but I have one option daily for the first and about 12 for the second, and given the better connection options, the total time often isn't that different (I find that I have ~45 minute connections way more often in ATL and ~3 hour connections way more often in SLC). But some people can't get over what it looks like on the map.
It is almost exactly a one-hour flight from IND-ATL. It's a little farther to MSP and a little shorter to DTW. I can make up the 20 minutes or so difference on a shorter connection MOST of the time. More than 25 years ago, friends gave me .... for flying IND-ATL-SEA and they just couldn't believe it was the fastest way to get there in total time.
