Turns out a multi-city booking would have been the answer. I'd never used that function or even investigated it, partly because the vast majority of my flights in recent times have been bought with points. I could have started in Egypt instead of Durban and saved £300 with TK and £350 on the positioning flight. I'll consider in the morning whether to cancel and rebook, half of the saving would be lost to fees but that's still returning half.
In case it matters - my other flights are CAI-DEN-CAI (non-refundable) and DUB-BOG-DUB £1600.
