I don't either, and honestly I'm not sure if there's even a meaningful distinction to be made between "interior" and "coastal" hubs. I've definitely seen tons of people in this group refer to SLC as a "west coast" hub (and then argumentatively defend that position) even though SLC is further from the ocean than, say, DTW,
THis is closely related to some people being very concerned with whether a routing involves backtracking. MEM-SLC-SFO is much more "direct" than MEM-ATL-SFO but I have one option daily for the first and about 12 for the second, and given the better connection options, the total time often isn't that different (I find that I have ~45 minute connections way more often in ATL and ~3 hour connections way more often in SLC). But some people can't get over what it looks like on the map.
