If you are looking at a separate TK ticket out of the ME/Gulf to South America via IST, you'll probably find origins cheaper than Damascus. An itinerary involving Damascus to the US is probably not a wise choice.

for change carriers, in Kuwait, kuwait airways fly from a different terminal than other carriers, which might involve immigration (what I see from internet), Kuwait airport might be small enough to navigate though. In general changing carriers is a good strategy to minimize turnaround time and save money too
