This happened to me too, although luckily my exit row seat remained unclaimed and I was able to get it back. It took the AAgent a long time to get it done though.
Can't you verify on your "My Reservations" page whether the upgrade request has actually been cancelled? Or are you guys saying that it showed up as cancelled on "My Reservations" but actually wasn't when you showed up at the gate?
